Most SLPs get little or no education in fluency, and that appears unlikely to change. A 2007 survey by Glen Tellis found that most SLPs lacked basic skills in assessing and treating stuttering. (Tellis, G, Bressler, L., Emerick, K. (2008). An exploration of clinician views about assessment and treatment of stuttering. Perspectives on Fluency and Fluency Disorders, 18 (1): 16-23). I advise consumers to either find a board recognized fluency specialist or "kick the tires" by asking clinicians about their education and experience in fluency.
