Thanks for your reply. What prompted this question is the following situation: I am taking a graduate stuttering class and have to "stutter" in 5 different situations without the people that I interact with knowing that I am not really a person who stutters. In preparing for this assignment I had a thought that if I were really stuttering and having a time of great difficulty, that I might rather sign instead of speaking. After thinking about your response as well as my fear in attempting this assignment, I realize that it was probably an attempt at "avoidance!" I can't imagine how difficult it must be to get up the courage to speak even in the times when it is most difficult!
