Schools (and ASHA) need to change the mind-set that every SLP is qualified to treat ALL speech and language disorders. It's unrealistic to expect that every school clinician will be qualified to work with children who stutter. However, it is feasible for a school district to either have a board recognized specialist on staff or use specialists as consultants. If school clinicians consult an expert when they encounter a child who stutters, instead of trying to muddle through on their own, the quality of therapy will improve tremendously.
