NMU –Jocelyn S As an undergraduate student studying to become an SLP, I very much enjoyed reading your article regarding services aimed to help those who stutter. I read from a post on your article, an idea about establishing a relationship between the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences department at a university with the Disability Services office. This is an excellent idea to get the ball rolling. Students and professors alike could collaborate and perhaps educate the staff about stuttering. However, students who stutter would be the ultimate supporters of the push to get better services for those who stutter. Disability Services needs to ask those who stutter (perhaps in an e-mail) “What could our staff do to better help serve you?” The generated feedback would greatly help Disability Services to become more educated in what stutterers really need. So not only do many Disability Services offices need to be educated, those who stutter do too. I’m sure that many of them just aren’t aware that more can be done to help them on their journey to earning their degree. In what method would you propose for getting those who stutter to advocate for better services? Perhaps flyers? After reading this article, it’s generated a lot of interesting thoughts about what I could do to help raise awareness about stuttering at my own university. I look forward to hearing any input you might have. Thank you for bringing to light such an important issue for so many students.
