Dear Angie, I think some PWS can go through this stage (see fluency as an inherent ability to, just after, see it as a flexible skill). But I don’t think this must be the case for all PWS, because I know some PWS who had always exhibited the mastery-oriented response. About the second question, Carol Dweck’s research has also demonstrated that some people have both responses. Maybe this can happen with stuttering too. Perhaps helpless response is more activated in some situations and mastery-oriented response is more activated in others. Regards, Sandra
