Dear Allison, in specific situations, factors like gender can influence the response the person exhibits. For example, women tend to show helpless response with regard to mathematical skills more than men. The stereotype says that women are “naturally” worse on mathematics than men. This directs to helpless response because the lack of ability would be inherent. Until this moment, there aren’t studies about helpless and mastery-oriented responses with PWS. So I’m going to answer the others two questions based on my clinical experience. The clients I see usually show helpless response with regard to stuttering. This affects speech therapy in several ways. For example, they usually do not like or want to listen to their recordings, they are not so available to analyze their stuttering and to think how it could be improved, they use and practice less fluency techniques, they miss more to the sessions. All these behaviors reduce the chances to improve. Regards, Sandra
