It would seem very useful to adjust the thought processes in stuttering therapy to help one to see fluency as an ability that can be learned, but there lies the problem of overcoming those fears. For a person with a helpless mindset, each difficulty could be seen as another failure, setting them even further back. It is really an unfortunate sort of cycle to have to try and overcome. For those who see fluency as a skill that can be improved, there is less pressure, which would likely decrease the stuttering at least to some degree. However, for those who already feel helpless, the fears associated with speaking situations may make the stuttering worse, and make it even harder to overcome. Very interesting article, I enjoyed reading it!
