Dear Maureen, thank you for your questions. 1 and 2) I think that mastery-oriented response makes easier to improve stuttering, because mastery-oriented people embrace challenges and strive themselves. But this is not mandatory. People with helpless response can also improve stuttering, but perhaps they will not have so much success. 3) Yes, a person’s culture or education influence if he/she will exhibit helpless or mastery-oriented responses with regard to stuttering. The responses are learned and we learn them in our environment. 4) I think SLP can work with psychologists or psychiatrics when treating PWS, especially when PWS have anxiety, depressive, or personality disorders. But I think that, if the negative emotional reactions are exclusively with regard to stuttering, they should be treated by SLP, because it’s about stuttering. Regards, Sandra
