Sandra, I enjoyed reading your article, especially since my fluency class seems to spend a lot of time discussing different attitudinal approaches people who stutter, and those closest to them, can posses. Assuming that there are many PWS who probably fall somewhere on the spectrum in between a helpless response and mastery-oriented response, in your professional opinion, what advice could you offer someone who is feeling helpless but would like to overcome their issues with stuttering by executing a mastery-oriented response? What therapeutic techniques would you recommend? Additionally, from your experience with working with PWS, do you see a common characteristic or quality that is shared among those who employ the helpless-response as opposed to those who employ the mastery-oriented response?
