Professor Merlo, I would first like to tell you that the article was very enlightening and in simple words, "it made sense". My question to you is, Does the research take into consideration the stutterer's background and environment in assessing how a person may deal differently with difficulty? What I mean is, does a person who is helpless response prone feel threatened because they grew up in an un-supportive environment, where they may have been ridiculed or ignored? And does the person who exhibits a mastery oriented response do so because they where sheltered by their family and friends, or because they were encouraged in any task that they may have tried to accomplish? Are there underlying reasons why a person who stutters may respond to difficulty with either a helpless response or a mastery oriented response?
