Dear Suhair, thanks for your comments and questions. Carol Dweck’s research has shown that people LEARN to react to difficulties with helpless or mastery-oriented response. We learn this with people we know (parents, teacher, friends). Being ridiculed or ignored could not teach someone to react with helpless response, because the person can understand that he/she is being ridiculous when stuttering, but he/she can also understand that it’s possible to change. The key to develop helpless response is to understand that stuttering cannot be changed, that it cannot be improved. It’s something like: “As the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined”.
