Hi Michelle, My social life sure was affected by trying to hide my stuttering. I basically didn't have a social life, because I tried to avoid most social situations. Since coming out and stuttering openly, I am almost a different person. Now I am much more comfortable with who I am, and am not afraid to be me. I allowmy true self to come out, the same one I thought no one would like because I stutter. I have lots of friends, am very involved in the community, and enjoy socializing now. People accept me for who I am , and if they choose not to, then I choose not to interact with them. Sure, I still feel fear and shame sometimes, but its normal now, now gripping me so tight that I stayed in the shadows. As I have grown and changed and evolved, some of my my relationships changed too. Most for the better, one not so good. But that is part of change as well. We cannot stay the same. You will probably get to help someone through the change process. It is an incredibly powerful experience.
