Hi Stephanie, No it doesn't frustrate me that grad students don't have much experience with fluency. I expect that, and now realize that this is a great opportunity to teach the student SLP's real life stuff that will help you in your career. My school therapy was over 30 years ago. Not as much was known about stuttering, and I am pretty sure I was he first for this therapist. I am sure she did the best she could. I would like to see school SLPs consult with fluency specialists if they have not had experience working with kids who stutter. The SLP NEEDS to know how thata kid may be feeling, and the kid may not share how he/she really feels, because its embarassing. The kid may feel shame, fear, irrational worry, may be being picked on, and may be activiely concocting avoidance tricks, which h/she may not wish to admit. I would also like school SLPs to work on and encourage acceptance. If I had known asakif that it really was OK to stutter, I wouldn't have had such a painful and lonely journey.
