Nayereh, thanks for reading and leaving such a good comment. The reason I wrote this is that I think its important for SLP's - new or seasoned -to take a step back and remember why a client comes to therapy. They are looking for support. Support is most felt when the client senses a warm, trusting relationship. I have heard of some clinicians whose approach is, trust me, if you follow what I say, you will be more fluent. If the client does not become fluent, or more fluent, there is the risk that the client can feel like a failure. So, taking the approach of a partnership I think is much more likley to offer support and change, and could be the foundation for work on fluency shaping or stuttering modification if the client wants that.
