Hi Shannon, Yes, I agree that in order for therapy to work or be of some benefit, the client must be ready and want it. It speaks to the saying I go by with my students that I work with: meet them where they are at. After thirty+ years of hiding and pretending to be someone I was not, I was ready to give support a try. Notice I refer to it as support. The first year or so I was in therapy, I actually was not doing therapy. I was absorbing acceptance. I was not ready to work on fluency techniques. No in my third year of therapy with student clinicians as an adult, I am ready to learn at least one tool that may help with some blocking that I have been experiencing, which is more pronounced for me than its ever been. I am not 100% committed to using a technique, but I am committed to learning how to use it, so I have a tool in my back pocket should I choose to use it. I think clinicians can learn from me that a combination of support and technique activities might work best.
