Michelle, Good question. I think the key ingredient that SLP's todayt are missing is lack of experience with people who stutter. Some schools only require one fluency course, and some students never meet someone who stutters. I have hear people in the field talk about being nervous, afraid or intimidated about dealing with stuttering becasue there is no qucik fix or cure. Fears and lack of experience may transfer over into work with clients who stutter. So, I think conferences like this, meeting real live PWS and perhaps observing self-help groups are really powerful ways to bridge the gap. Thats why I personally like to share my expeirences. I enjoy going to speak to grad classes. I was at first terrified of doing it, like we all are of new things. I wish there were more opportunities for me to do that actually, because SLP students can learn best from those of us who stutter!
