Savetrie, hmmm, good question. Interstingly, the support group I attend has recently become much more diverse. We have two male PWS from Bangladesh, who definitely view their own stuttering as a problem, and are open about it. In my Toastmasters circles, I alos know 2 male PWS from India, who are quite covert and don't openly acknowledge the stuttering, even though it is quite obvious at times that I stutter. Another male PWS that I talk with on Skype stutters openly, is also from India, and feels his stuttering is preventing his success on job interviews. Also, I have become very close friends with a guy from Yemen who stutters. He is quite open and we discuss it freely. He has also began taking steps to acknowledge his stuttering with his university colleagues. I have a female friend from England who had always hidden her stuttering, and prefers to be publicly covert. So,perhaps there are some ethnic differences, but I think comfort level has a lot to do with how strong of a support system you have. The internet and Skype have really opened up the world for people who stutter. It is wonderful to be so global and see that whether it is stammering or stuttering, we share many of the same experiences.
