Natalie, even though the gurus at St Rose might not like this, I am going to say a resounding yes. I think a clinician really needs to get a handle on attitudes and feelings with a PWS, to make sure that treatment "treats the right thing". Why spend time on learning easy onset if the person's real issue is a deep sense of shame? If a person doesn't understood, they might not be able to, or want to, carry over speech targets. That was me - for a long time. And honestly, how I feel about my stuttering, becsue it varies so much, is more important to me than whether I can focus on full breath, or remembering to breather from my diaphraghm. Do you think about those things when you talk? Probably not, you just talk. And so does 99% of the population. Sol feelings, emotions, and "baggage" very much needs to be explored, felt, validated and supported before one (especially an adult) tries to learn targets and class sounds. Good question! Were you in the class I spoke to on Monday night??
