Hello Cathy, I am a graduate student at New York University in Communicative Sciences and Disorders and am currently taking a class on fluency. I wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed reading your article and I wanted to commend you on your bravery. While I was reading your article I could not help but think of my best friend who also stutters. He too has many avoidance behaviors and I have seen him have trouble with his name, Timothy, as well. When you mentioned making up words like changing Starbucks to S’Buck, I had to smile because my friend does the exact same thing; for example, Taco Bell becomes T Bell. I was wondering what made you just go for it and attend the NSA conference. I think my friend would benefit from being around other people who stutter in an effort to help him to accept his stuttering. Which includes many avoidance behaviors and I have a sense that he is ashamed of his speech. I would like to mention the conference to him but I want to do so in a way that he does not get offended or think I feel that he needs help. I was wondering if you had an idea of how I could approach the situation with my friend. Please respond whenever you find the time. Thank you so much for your time and for sharing your story.
