Nicole, I have been asked some of your questions many times - do my parents know I stutter and how do they feel about it? As a child, I did receive some speech therapy in elementary school but stopped in Junior High. My speech was never discussed as a child and for all I know, my mom may think I outgrew it. In school, the subject of stuttering did not come up much, that was part of the problem. Since I did not know a lot about it, I know those around me did not either. I knew about other disorders, the ones we were taught in school, but not about stuttering. I knew that if I didn't know much, that my classmates didn't either. That is important for teachers to discuss in the classroom even if there are no stutters who stutter. They have no idea how the can change someone's lives by teaching them what it means and how to react for when they encounter someone who does. They will always remember what they learned since it is a very unique disorder. I do not think speech therapy will help until I am ready to be open with my stuttering. Maybe one day, but not today!
