Meryl, overt people do not always understand a covert PWS. Many overt people think that covert means to not talk or avoid situation, and state that they can do that too. The difference is that covert PWS can still talk and will face a situation and many will not know they stutter. They will get by somehow, getting their point across and no one even knowing they stutter. I truly believe that if many people who are overt could hide their stuttering, they would. Some of it is about acceptance, some of it is about just wanting to be fluent more often. I know many are supplied with the tools and techniques to be more fluent and I know it's a lot of work but going after the things we want is work. Many overt PWS are accepting of their speech and open about it and I think that is great, but some still use their techniques, as hard as it is becuase they want to improve their speech. I know it can be exhausting, and it is an individual choice. For me, everytime I hide my stuttering becomes work just like an overt person using their techniques to help them get through their stuttering. With me, it is hard work, it's just something I do and it is more work for me if I don't. Does that make sense?
