I am a graduate student studying speech-language pathology and am taking my first course in stuttering. I really liked reading your article; it provided me with some great insights into the life of a covert stutterer. I’m wondering if you were able to successfully hide your stuttering from everyone, or if your parents or anyone else knew before you told them. I can’t imagine how much energy it must take to repeatedly rehearse everything you want to say. I anticipate that working with covert stutterers will be more difficult for me than working with overt stutterers because a covert stutterer may be able to trick me with techniques similar to those you mentioned. Do you have any advice for a beginning clinician working with a covert stutterer?
