Hi again. :-) I think the issue is greater. During the surprise calls, the recording person makes the recorded person aware of the recording, and some switch to techniques or on best behaviour. I know of a specific case where some devious Master student did not believe the good recordings and called the patients under the disguise of being X. Result: the treatment effect was noticeably lower, the ethics committee saw unethical behaviour of the student, and the result are not officially published and the standard recordings are held up by everyone as evidence of success! Just shows how deciding based on ethical principles can create unethical consequences! Also, one effect we always seem to neglect is that the pre-treatment recordings might well be more severe as these are the first recordings. The patient is either nervous and they want to prove that they really stutter. I had these exact experiences.
