I am delighted to see you addressing this issue. I have been concerned for some time that the lack of consistent measurement may put the most effective clinicians at a disadvantage: both in meeting government and insurance requirements for evidence of effectiveness, and in competing in an unregulated market in which consumers may be seduced by unsubstantiated claims. I would like to see a consensus --among ASHA, SID4, et. al. -- on a standard way of measuring treatment outcomes that includes attitude and lifestyle changes and not just fluency statistics. On a personal note, I did my own cost-benefit analysis years ago, and determined that the self-confidence that I achieved in therapy resulted in raises and promotions at work that quickly recovered the cost of the treatment program.
