Wow! That is a bunch of questions, but I will do my best to answer them a bit at a time.. First of all, "When/how do you know that it is the “right time” to implement this part of your therapy?" and "how do you know when the time is right for you to acknowledge or have them acknowledge their stuttering?". These seem to be the same question. I have no definitive age for you. I believe in knowing the child and trusting our clinical intuition and knowledge coupled with expereince. I can only say that it is important to make certain children do not ever get the message that stuttering is something we can't or shoulnd't talk about...it has to be an open topic which is handled in a safe and supportive environment. Second Quesion: "Should you even address this at all – or should you continue to provide a good speech model and keep the environment comfortable?" This activity is designed for school age chidlren who stutter, so I can only say that YES, we do need to learn about speech and stuttering. Modeling is important, but it doesn't help a child to become their own change agent and learn how to handle stuttering in the long term. Third question: "What happens if you implement the process of making the client aware of their disfluencies too early?: Let me say at the outset that this mapping activity is NOT designed to "make a child aware" of his stuttering. It is simply a vehicle to represent the process of learning to handle stutteirng. The answers to the question about awareness too early would be "depends upon what you are doing to "make a child aware" AND "depends on the child." I don't personally "create awareness" so I can't speak to this question. I only know that learning about speech and stuttering is part of the discovery and education that is impoerative for long term success in therapy...in my view. I hope I have addressed your questions. Thank you for reading and for posting!
