James, thank you for your kind comments. I agree with you about people interjecting, but let me just add that with any speaking strategy or with just stuttering in general, there is always the possibility that people will interject. I absolutely think it is okay for people who stutter to tell others that we would like to finish our sentences. However, I also believe in “choosing our battles.” For me, the best thing was to decide those times in which it was really important to me. I had a good buddy who talked really, really fast and talked a lot. I finally told him that every now and then I was going to let him know that I was having trouble getting into the conversation because of my stuttering. To his credit, he completely understood and he would even ask me if I wanted a speaking turn. You ask if I advise people to advertise. I advertise (tell people I stutter). Instead of advising people who stutter to advertise, I try and let folks know that they have the right to advertise and the right to experiment with advertising. I would agree that for me, one of the best things I did was begin telling people I stutter. My preference was to stutter on purpose while telling people I stutter. Thanks again for writing James.
