Ari, I admire your great questions! I can theorize why pausing reduces the frequency of my own stuttering and reduces the frequency of stuttering with many of my clients, but at the end of the day, I really don’t know why pausing reduces stuttering. You ask, “did pausing when you feel you are going to stutter is stopping totally the effort to speak or something else?” For me, pausing was (and is) a way to prevent moments of stuttering from occurring. It is also a way to allow the feeling of stuttering to pass. Some folks would call that avoidance, but I think it is more complicated than that. Does that make it clearer? The 2 second idea you mention is interesting. I am not that rigid at all. I think that people should experiment with speaking strategies in different ways to find what works for them. Thanks so much for writing Ari, I always look forward to your comments.
