Do you also remember being told in therapy: "when you feel a stutter, use an onset/light contact?" I do. Question: how do we 'feel' a stutter coming? We feel an anticipatory anxiety sensation in the region between stomach and larynx (soma). The pause can allow our anatomy to relax as we initiate a word. A deep breath can be contraindicated; just use light contact and easy exhale in unison. Dean Williams talked about "know what you do when you stutter." He meant before, during, and after. Because pws tend to impulsively jump into an anticipated word I encourage them to insert a quota of 25 unnecessary pauses in their speech every day. This builds a tolerance for pausing; to make it familiar. Nice paper.
