Tim, thanks for writing. I share your belief that “the pause can allow our anatomy to relax.” However, I am also quick to state that I really do not know why stuttering helps to reduce stuttering. I have my own ideas and beliefs, but theories aside, it has been my experience that using pausing greatly reduces the frequency of stuttering for almost all of my school age to adult clients. I can really only think of one student who I have worked with who doesn’t seem to benefit from using pausing. And of course, some students and clients are able to use pausing to reduce stuttering but choose not to do so because they find the tool frustrating or uncomfortable.
