In my case, I am not sure that pausing ever became “automatic.” But pausing has certainly influenced how I talk. For example, when I know or feel a stutter approaching, I may take a pause to let the stuttering moment pass. I usually make a mental note such as, “I am stopping now.” If the moment doesn’t pass, I can then say to myself, “Let’s try an easy onset” or “Just stutter on it.” I am not sure I would call this automatic, but what is nice is that I have used these tools enough where when I need them, I am often able to consider how I want to proceed. My experience has been that that more I practiced using speech tools in challenging situations, the less I feared doing so and the better I got at it. I do appreciate though that our experiences seem to be different. Thanks again for writing Ari.
