Lucas, thanks so much for writing. I agree with you 100% that pausing is a great tool for working on time pressure. Thank you for pointing that out. I am disappointed that I did not mention this in the article, but it is great that you brought it up. You wrote, “Pausing isn't an unnatural thing.” I agree with you, but for some speakers, purposively pausing is unnatural (at least at first). A few clients have leveled with me that “pausing sounds weird” to which I have asked, “but doesn’t stuttering also sound different or weird?” Unfortunately, so much about speaking strategies for people who stutter involve tampering down communicative emotions. I know that using pausing may force one to sacrifice some of the emotions of talking, but for me, it was worth it. I really appreciated being introduced to a speech tool that reduced my stuttering and made me feel in control. The trade off was real, but acceptable to me as well.
