Shayna, thank you for your question and comments. Yes, some listeners will have a negative reaction to advertising stuttering (telling others that you stutter). That is okay. Advertising stuttering is done both for the speaker and the listener. My experience has been that most listeners are polite or neutral when it comes to advertising and every now and then someone be impatient or even angry about advertising. The listener smiles I have experienced have far outweighed the negative reactions. I recall a friend in grad school angrily asking me not to advertise my stuttering during a presentation we were giving together to our classmates. Her point was that “How many more times are you going to advertise to the same people?” I remember saying something like “I advertise because it is important to me.” I also explained that there were some people in the class, including the professor, who did not know me.
