Harriet, I appreciate the question. You write, “You mentioned that interjecting a pause in order to be useful, would need to be distinguished from avoidance. Couldn't this get tricky and 'heady' since each pause would presumably have a unique purpose and would need analysis on a case by case basis?” It has not been my experience that every use of a speech tool, including pausing, requires a specific analysis each time it is used. My experience has been that speech therapy and experimenting with speaking tools requires lots of experimentation, reflection, discussion and real life practice. Something that I think often gets lost in speech pathology and in training programs is that speech therapy is about doing. If the client is working on pausing, the client goes out and uses pausing in a variety of different situations, with a variety of different speech tools, for a variety of different reasons, and discussions and reflections occur along the way. Thanks again for writing.
