Hi Peter, Thank you for another enlightening article about pausing. I recall your earlier paper in the Journal of Stuttering Therapy, Advocacy and Research. I used pausing to good effect when I embarked upon a concerted effort to deal with my stuttering issues. They allowed me to resist time pressure, while also affording me the opportunity to formulate the words I wanted to say. They removed confusion and created inner tranquility, thus eliminating the tangled turmoil that invariably accompanied my speaking process. Today, I use the pause when undertaking my many public speaking activities. It is such a powerful tool and keeps the audiences waiting with baited breath for my next utterance. :-) It is particularly effective immediately prior to presenting a punchline. Indeed, several judges have commented most favourably upon my delivery when awarding me the silverware in public speaking competitions. They also recommend that other contestants (fluent speakers) attempt to emulate my style. How ironic!:-) Kindest regards Alan
