Chris, thanks for sharing your story! I enjoyed reading your article and as a future speech-language pathologist I have gained some insight into the struggles of a PWS (although I realize every experience is different for each PWS). Interesting how the public views stuttering as a kind of “disease” that one will catch as in the case of your girlfriend breaking up with you. You mention how stuttering affects your “sleep, appetite, and nerves” I’ve never thought about the aspects that are much more than speech and communication. When you comment how it was your job to make others feel better about your stuttering did you ever feel that way about speech therapists? (if you saw any at that time) As a society we are so plagued by the feeling of others. It speaks volumes of the progress you made feeling comfortable with your stutter that you began to get across what you were saying, rather than concentrating on how you were saying it. I also thought your idea that it is what you think that matters the most, which is powerful for everyone no matter if they are disordered or not. There are many issues that affect how someone feels about themselves. Although they stress in school that you shouldn’t care what other people think; only people not really in the school believe that. I hope other PWS read your article, especially if they are in such social situations. Again, great insight. Thanks for sharing!
