Thanks so much, Megan, for your kind comments and good questions. Yep, I did pursue fluency and speaking as well as I could as my goal -- not acceptance! That was in my 20s and early 30s which coincided with my normal life course of competitive goals to be the best you could be and I defined best as "fluent." Little did I know that best meant "communicator." You've nailed it perfectly when you realize you need to know the client's goal. Remember, as a SLP, it's not about you -- it's about that client and his or her life and needs. You can help influence him or her into a more positive journey, if they're going in the wrong direction, and then they may begin to become encouraged to make better choices of acceptance due to your model and presence.
