I think Fred Rodgers of the Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood PBS show demonstrates well how to relate to children. He honors them as individuals, not as Mini-Me's or confidants or black boxes, but as real, live human beings. His converational syle and music show us how to speak and listen to children (preschool children primarily) to help them feel respected for who they are. Looking at some of his shows might guide you to develop a relational style of your own that functions similarly. >>> Perhaps you already know about the increasing application of mindfulness to US grade-school classrooms (e.g,, Boyce, B. (2009). Teach Our Children Well. Shambhala Sun, September, pp. 79-81.) The goal is to help teachers reduce stress and improve their awareness of their own feelings and responsiveness to them so they can relate more effectively to children presenting challenging behavior or problems. And, of course, by doing so, they function as models of awareness, concentration, and skillful action. Contemplative education also is being introduced to an increasing number of high school and university curricula, which you may know. Perhaps, becoming acquainted with these aproaches to learning may help you find the path you want to follow as a clinician, or support you in the path you have already claimed. >>> Thank you for your feedback. It seems Dr. Shapiro has taught you well. >>> Best, Ellen-Marie Silverman
