Kelly, Marty only briefly explains his 'wants for therapy' but part of his explanation of living in the present was not quoted in my article and may clear things up for you. Marty goes on to say that living in the present means "not worrying about the future or reliving past humiliations." He also suggests that living in the present helps reduce anxiety. The decision to focus on the present in therapy should, of course, be the client's choice. Some people who stutter may need to address feelings from the past in order to begin making progress in therapy. Hope that helps! Lisa
