I remember reading Marty's book when I was in high school, and it was the first time I ever broke out of my therapy/conquering attitude towards stuttering for a more human view of stuttering. Later I met him online and at NSA conferences, and ended up selling my Edinburgh Masker to him. Small world of stutter. The last paragraph about civics and being part of a social community really resonated with me. This indeed is what I'm now beginning to get out of my stuttering community involvement. One big thing I learned from Marty was that communication really is nonverbal as much as verbal. His big smile and friendly welcoming attitude cut right through any difficulty that his severe stutter caused. Thanks for helping me to remember him. I'm a fairly severe stutterer myself and having a difficult time finding role models who stutter more than myself and are seriously self actualized. I now remember Marty was a strong stutterer and strongly approaching life.
