In terms of awareness, I think that educating the child on what happens during fluent speech production and contrasting it with what they are doing when they stutter is very helpful. For example, I have an eighty year old in therapy who frequently exhibits bursts of voicing from initiating airflow quickly but not actually initiating voicing. We called them "voice pops" and I had him do them on purpose and then contrast them with some easy voice so he could feel the difference. Then we started identifying them when he did them. I also explained why they happen and how they interfere with easier talking. I do think the key with t he school age kids lies in a combination of giving them choices for talking and helping them feel good about talking.
