Erin- I am glad you found the article helpful. It is hard as graduate students to grasp the "big picture" of therapy for stuttering when are in the process of learning theory and philosophy surrounding stuttering therapy as well as individual programs. The ability and more importantly the comfort level you need to address and support attitudes and emotions comes with time and experience. What's important for you now as a student is to understand the need is there and strive with each client to find a way to provide that, like you said! I try to teach my students a well rounded approach to treatment to best help them in doing the very same thing.
