We can empower our older clients within therapy as well. Some of the things I do would include structuring therapy and transfer in a way where they are always experiencing some degree of success. It is also important to stay on top of their expectations for change outside, which is often less than what is happening in therapy. I always talk about what to expect for the week ahead at the end of therapy what a realistic goal might be. Talking about looking back at how far we have come instead of looking ahead at how far we need to go id also beneficial. Keeping weekly goals in check with realistic change is important. I find that adults need much support in this area. It is so easy to "inflate" change in therapy only to crash during the week. I think this is key to keeping them motivated and on right track to go the distance with therapy.
