The saddest thing for being a stutterer in China, at least some years ago, is that even the family members might have problem to understand and accept stuttering. I think that's why I have been so deeply hurt by stuttering, and I have heard from a few other fellow Chinese stutterers of the same stories. It is also understandable that culture, economy, and individual traits may play important roles here. Generally the Chinese society does not have a good knowledge of stuttering and has a tremendous degree of discrimination toward stuttering, or other complicated disorders. The parents know this and they want to change their kids who stutter; however, they don't know how to do it. They believe that if they push the kids harder, the kid may improve and have more chance to succeed in the future. Therefore, it is also hard to blame the parents. It is just a huge project to go to change the social discrimination against stuttering in China and it may take a long time.
