"Been criticized for stuttering too mildly..." I have the same problem. Now that I don't stutter much, some stutterers have problems in accepting me as a stutterer, or not as "real" as them. And I still deem myself as a stutterer. After so many years struggling with stuttering, it is already a part of me. But I don't voluntarily stutter often, simply because it is not my type of stuttering. I hid stuttering. So, I was severe, but other thought I was moderate; I was moderate, and others thought I was mild; I am very, very mild now, but in my mind I am a "bigger" stutterer than many. This is the conundrum of stuttering. It is really hard to define severity. It is more like personal experience, and incomparable with another. It seems that, although the perception toward stuttering in the general public needs to be altered, the perception in stutterers needs to be updated also.
