Hi Susan, Yes, sometimes preschoolers really don't seem to be affected, in terms of fears and negative self concept, by their stuttering... they just plow through those stutters, using their speech and language for what it's meant to be used for... telling everyone those great ideas in their head. Nothing stops them and it's great! I like to keep it that way. I consider that the goal for preschoolers is to decreaese their stuttering or the severity of it enough so that they never do acquire that heavy emotional baggage and negative attitudes... i.e. for them we hope it can be all about the "B" rather than the ABCs. Realistically, I also need to carefully look at increasing tension levels during stuttering. The child may not be mature enough to either verbalize negative thoughts/emotions or to acquire them, but if their body is reacting with increased tension to stuttering ( i.e. is pitch rising, is repetition rate increasing, is he blocking?) then that tells me that this little kid IS reacting to his stutter and on some level. This paper is about creating ABC "assignments"...and with a preschooler I wouldn't address any that I thought they had so directly. Instead, would just simply constantly modeling acceptance of themselves as a speaker and a communicator as we also worked on smooth speech. However, a previous question on this thread raised the possibility of using these ABC assigments with spouses. So, now I'm thinking, why not find a way to use ABC assignment charts with parents? Something I now might think about! Thanks for your question and good luck in school! Marybeth Allen
