Hi Tiffany. Yes, it's hard to make people understand what stuttering is about, but if you mix facts with a personal story about situations we meet every day, it makes it more understandable. With younger children I bring my DAF as it is fun and it MAKES them stutter and feel awkward, so that they understand how it feels to speak in a different way in front of the class. I not only talk about stuttering. I also talk about acceptance, friendship, bullying, the role parents and teachers have etc. But most of all I try to make those who stutter talk for themselves and those who don't to give an insight in our lives. Because don't we mostly make fun of something we don't really understand? "The fear of the unknown" you said. Spot on! In some schools they work with both IQ and EQ, E for emotional, and talk about feelings, but I wish all schools would do this and start with first class. It's so easy, but yet so few do it... In Sweden we hace 16 chapters all over the country with people who gladly come to schools to talk. That too is the power of stuttering self help! Have a great ISAD! Anita
