Hi Suzanne and thanks for your nice comments. Stuttering is not an easy thing to carry, especially not when you're young, so we need all the positiity we can get! Self-acceptance is a tough thing when you're young. There's so much that you're not happy with and it's hard to see anything that's positive. So find those positive things. Positive sides (have them make a list of at least 10 things they are good at and have them put it next to their beds with a pen attached to add other things), and make them aware they themselves can change the situation, maybe just a little, but still. They can talk about stuttering , to family, friends, teachers and others around them, and tell them about how they would like to be treated. ANd find alternative ways to do presentations (PPT, recordings etc) . And that stuttering is kinda cool, as we have our own day, we have fun camps, there are international meetings being a lot of fun, and the fact that so few people stutter, makes us, not weird, but UNIQUE! There are many fun lines for people who stutter. I use my two buttons "S-s-sure I s-s-stutter. What are you good at?" and "I stutter, because what I have to say is worth repeating." And there are many others. And why not include friends in therapy, helping them with home exerices, stuttering in the streets etc. It's easier to cope with stuttering if you are able to have a laugh at it every once in a while. That's why we have a woodpecker as our logo. As laughing at it first, makes it easier to reply when others laugh at us... And yes, I still speak to people who stutter, but also to teachers, politicians on local, national and international level, therapists and the community. Because, if we don't tell them, how can we expect them to understand and help us? SO please, help us to get the word out and find something positive when things get tough. Happy ISAD!
