I am a first year SLP graduate student at the beginning of my clinical career. As such, I have been privileged with technology in the classroom and as a valuable research method. However, I had never given it much consideration to administering therapy. Before reading this paper I did not hold much esteem for teletherapy. It seemed almost untrustworthy to me. After reading the paper, my opinions changed. As pointed out, I think it provides a great opportunity for people who would not otherwise be able to receive therapy. As a beginning clinician, I enjoy working with people that are physically in the same room with me. But, not everyone has a clinic close by; teletherapy makes it possible for them to receive strategies to help their speech. Another aspect of teletherapy that was intriguing to me was being able to pay for a few sessions, grasping the concept of stuttering therapy, and then persisting on their own if they do not have the funds to continue with a clinician. Someone who may not have been able to afford going to therapy at a clinic does not have to miss out on the opportunity to learn strategies to help them communicate more effectively. As an SLP-in training, I have a strong belief that everyone has the right to communicate and have help to make that happen. Teletherapy is helping to make that a more likely scenario.
