In my experience, the best basis for stuttering support groups is a common focus — where members have gone through the same therapy program. Members read off the same page in terms of practice and the existing program provides a continuing source of new members. Where there is no common focus, difficulties soon arise, causing the groups to remain very small and/or they wither and die. Additional problems occur when newcomers who've had little or no treatment for stuttering show up, expecting, unrealistically, that the support group offers speech therapy. After one or two meetings, they don't come back. — edfeuer@mts.net
