Many thanks to Lisa and Carla, for a very honest and 'down to earth' sharing. We in India have passed through the same struggles and are still going through. But there are many good signs. The Indian Stammering Association (TISA) is just about 2 year old. We have been fortunate in being able to recruit some young and diverse volunteers. It all started with a young IT professional seeking help for himself. Eventually, he understood that 'help for himself' was intricately linked with 'helping others'. Another very senior government servant understood the same message in south India. Many more young PWS got interested in this idea: talk about it and your stammering (mindset) will go away. Many of them are successfully running a Self help group, bringing out a newsletter, maintaining a website and a blog and one has started an IT company, bidding for BPO assignments, exclusively staffed by PWS.. How did all this happen? I went to a wise man some years ago, who knocked two ideas in to my (thick) head: Accept your stammer and serve others selflessly. Wherever I went, whatever I wrote and talked about- I tried my best to hang on to those two themes. In the process, I was successful in finding other Indian PWS who were on the same wavelength! A vibrant network of individuals, driven by same ideals, started. Two of my colleagues have submitted there experiences in this very conference: Can running a Self Help Group for PWS, help in the long term recovery? We have achieved a lot in the last two years without any external help. But yes, funds are a constraint, as it is in your case, - not awareness so much. Before I conclude, let me ask you: Can Indian PWS apply for National Coordinator's post of CSA? (oh, never mind, this was just a sachinish joke..) BTW: I think we can carry on this discussion over emails and compare notes..I would love to.
